Visions of the Fall

Dancing Trees in the Fall, Impressionistic Chestnut RidgeDancing Trees in the FallImpressionistic Chestnut Ridge The 2016 season of color is over and even though it has just ended I already miss it. And it was a beautiful fall! My schedule did not allow me to be as active outdoors as I would have preferred but I still had enough opportunities to soak it all in. And even now as the colors fade and nature gets ready for its white coat there are still opportunities for colorful photographs.

For this photo outing I headed out with one specific idea in mind. I wanted to use camera motion to transform my photographs from literal depictions to something more moody, something you might see getting lost in a moment and zoning out not really focusing your eyes on any particular thing.

I even had a specific group of trees in mind. They're in the Chestnut Ridge Park and I call them the dancing trees. They're all different shapes, leaning in different directions, taking on different formations as one moves past them, appearing to dance. They are on my list of regularly revisited locations.

However, as I headed towards them in the drizzle another group of trees caught my eye. An alley of large aged oak trees was begging for attention and possibly the same intended treatment. Here, the arrangement was very different though. The trees did not appear random at all, they were regularly spaced and in lines, posing a challenge for the composition I was seeking. I kept moving around trying to find an angle that would break the regularity and give me a more engaging pattern. Eventually I found what I was looking for and spent several minutes fine tuning the perspective with a dance of my own, moving even so slightly in all directions watching what laid in front of me through the viewfinder.
