Land and water clashing in the most spectacular place on Lake Ontario and in my opinion one of the most spectacular places in New York State. Under normal circumstances one can enjoy the beautiful sights from the high trail through the woods, or from the beach below. However, sustained winds from the north combined with the high water level of summer made the second option impossible and the rocky cliffs cut sharply straight in the water of Lake Ontario.

This photograph was taken about half an hour before sunset. You're looking westward towards the setting sun. The cloudy western sky provided a beautiful dramatic backdrop for the landscape below. As the sun disappeared behind them and worked its way down towards the horizon it was one marvellous natural show full of suspense and expectation. Will the sun peek out through some of the holes? Will it show up again at all? Will the sunset be visible? This photograph shows one of the brief moments sun rays found the land and water below!

The Chimney Bluffs State Park is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Sodus Bay. It all started during the last ice age when drumlins got created near receding glaciers as a record of their last direction. Then, wind, rain, snow, and waves and their erosive power shaped up the terrain into the spires we can see today. As the erosion continues it can shave off up to 5 feet a year. From Sodus Bay to Oswego there are other bluffs but none as visited as Chimney Bluffs.
