Winter sunrise at Buffalo Main Light photographed as the first rays of sun kissed the top of the lighthouse. A beautiful freezing morning, temperature hovering just over 0°F
Buffalo Main Light, often called simply Buffalo Light or Buffalo Lighthouse, is located across the Buffalo River from the Erie Basin Marina and next door to the United States Coast Guard Station. Visitors no longer have to enter the fenced off station grounds. Instead, a narrow gated path allows foot and bike access along the river. Opening hours are still enforced though.
The lighthouse was built in 1833 and replaced the original 1818 light. It served through 1914. It is 68 feet tall, and its octagonal shape gradually narrows from the bottom up. It just had a new Fresnel lens installed to be used starting in 2016.
