Lower Akron Falls, New York (NY) in summer frequently reduced to a trickle that can be magical.

The Akron Falls

Akron Falls is part of the Erie County Park System located along Murder Creek in the town of Akron, NY. It actually offers two natural waterfalls, Upper & Lower Akron Falls. Upper Akron Falls is generally inaccessible. The Lower Akron Falls, about 40 feet in height at the upper shelf, can be viewed either by following the dirt trail along the creek and later up into the woods and a viewing area, or by branching off the trail where it starts heading up and following the creek to the Falls. Here, conditions vary significantly with season and weather. In Spring after snow melts the waterfall is rather strong at both its lower portion and also the top. In summer, it can be reduced to trickles and the whole upper portion dries up entirely.

While many will recommend visiting this waterfall during heavy flow of the Murder Creek when both the upper and lower sections of the Lower Falls are in impressively heavy flow, I like to visit in summer or fall. I like the mood the slow trickles create as they find their many ways down to the pool below. During these times, all of the moss and rocks are visible and provide such a different view compared to the Spring time. Also, during the low flow, it is much easier to navigate the creek trail and get to the pool under the Falls. I also like to have all the foliage surround the Falls as opposed to the bare branches in the Spring. I would recommend visiting in the morning or evening when the light is softer. In the evening, the Falls are going to be sunlit. In early morning, if early enough, the Falls and the pool below will be in a complete shade. One definitive advantage of arriving very early, possibly before sunrise, is the privacy. You can have the place to yourself and soak in the sounds of falling water interrupted only by the chirping birds. That alone is worth losing some sleep!
