Before sunrise at Lower Akron Falls, New York (NY) in early summer. Frequently reduced to a trickle that can be magical.

Before Sunrise at Lower Akron Falls

While the waterfall, especially with the low flow, is quite a romantic place, the name of the creek it is on is less so. Akron Falls are on Murder Creek and there is a legend behind the name, as well as a later actual tragedy.

The Lower Falls are very easily accessible either from a lower parking lot on a path alongside the creek or from a higher parking lot down a short path. There is a viewing area high up facing the falls or you can see them from the creek level, especially during low water flow. There are also Upper Akron Falls, not as easily accessible.

This is a place I love going back to. And unlike most, I am not a big fan of the early Spring when high water gushes over the falls. Yes, there is more power during and right after the snow melt but there is no foliage to add color and there is so much water that some of the closer views are not really possible. I really prefer these gentle trickles, as long as they're flowing despite the waterfall being really reduced to half in height here with the while upper portion dried up. I at least got one small trickle in top right here. It was probably the last day to get that one since the water level dropped quickly day by day this spring.
