The Niagara River flows from Lake Erie in Buffalo, NY, to Lake Ontario in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada. Its 35-mile path creates the international border between the United States and Canada and is crossed by several major bridges (Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston Bridge). Along its way the river drops about 326 feet.

The most famous section is of course the Niagara Falls, separated by islands into three distinct sections: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls, where the river drops 165 feet down. The speed of the rapids at the falls reach 68 mph.

At Niagara Falls, the Niagara River is 3,100 feet wide (850' the American Falls, 50' Bridal Veil Falls, and 2,200' Horseshoe Falls). At the Niagara Gorge it narrows to only 200 feet and water rushes through the narrows at 30 mph.
