The Rage Up Close, Niagara River Gorge by Whirlpool State Park, Class 6 Rapids Whitewater

The Rage Up Close

The river rage zoomed in. This is the section of the Niagara River up the stream from the Whirlpool where class 6 rapids rage and provide an awesome show. I personally love this area very much, possibly more than NIagara Falls since one can be very close to the water and soak the roar in. Based on the time of the day, thee are quite a bit fewer people here too making for a more natural setting. It is always amazing to watch how the force of the water pushes amazing volumes of water up above the river only to tip over and crash right back down. What a show!

The Niagara River flows from Lake Erie in Buffalo, NY, to Lake Ontario in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada. Its 35-mile path creates the international border between the United States and Canada and is crossed by several major bridges (Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Queenston-Lewiston Bridge). Along its way the river drops about 326 feet.

The most famous section is of course the Niagara Falls, separated by islands into three distinct sections: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls, where the river drops 165 feet down. The speed of the rapids at the falls reach 68 mph.

At Niagara Falls, the Niagara River is 3,100 feet wide (850' the American Falls, 50' Bridal Veil Falls, and 2,200' Horseshoe Falls). At the Niagara Gorge it narrows to only 200 feet and water rushes through the narrows at 30 mph.
