Boardwalk and Informational Boards at Union Ship Canal Commons, Buffalo, New York (NY).

Union Ship Canal Commons

Union Ship Canal is one of the areas opened to public in recent years. This one opened in 2011 and provides a glimpse into the iron processing history of Buffalo and Western New York. The plaques installed on the boardwalk walk you through the history of the steel mills and iron processing in the area and the canal itself.

What were some of the big names around the canal? Susquehanna Iron Company, Hanna Furnace, Lackawanna Steel Company, Bethlehem Steel, Pennsylvania Railroad, and others.

It's also great that Union Ship Canal is not an isolated location. Multi-use trails connect it with the Outer Harbor, Tifft Nature Preserve, the Seaway Trail. all the way to the Buffalo Main Light. People have quickly started taking advantage of the new waterfront areas for walking, running, biking, kite flying, or restful boat watching and enjoying sunsets.
