Sun setting in the direction of the Gallagher Pier on Buffalo's Waterfront. You can see it like this only twice a year, and each time only for a few days assuming weather cooperates and the sun actually shows up. For most of the summer the sunset is significantly more to the north (right) outside of this frame.

On this particular night, clouds were unpredictable to the last minute. In the end, the promising opening on the horizon remained and the sun peeked out for a few brief minutes before disappearing behind the horizon and Lake Erie.

Unlike the wider view in another one of my photos, this one focuses on the pier extending into Lake Erie and provides a more intense sunset experience.

Gallagher Pier is one of the new structures that grew on the Outer Harbor of Buffalo along the south part of Buffalo's waterfront. It's right by the South End Marina Cargill Pool Elevator and the also new Union Ship Canal area. It advertises itself nicely since it is in plain sight from both the Fuhrmann Boulevard and Route 5. Especially at dusk when the illumination comes on it looks really nice by the water. However, the illumination did not kick in on this visit so either it is off seasonally or there is a snow detector on the lamps.
