South River Falls of Shenandoah National Park Up Close, Detail Study of Light and Colors, Virginia (VA).

South River Falls Up Close

The South River Falls is the third tallest waterfall in the Shenandoah National Park, 83 feet tall. In this photo however, the height was not what I was after. Instead, I really liked the light and colors in this section of the waterfall that I zoomed on.

South River Falls hike starts at mile 62.8 at the South River Picnic Area of the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. It's a short-seeming 4 mile roundtrip but the 850-foot climb turns it into an outdoor challenge after which you may even feel your leg muscles a bit. And don't forget, the climb is on your way back, so save some energy and bring enough water!

The roundtrip is advertised as only 2.6 miles but that is only to the top observation point. Another 1.4-mile roundtrip is needed to reach the waterfall base. And if you do not want to walk back up the same way, you can return via a fire road, adding another half a mile or so.

And don't just hike blindly to your destination. The creek you'll hike by is really photogenic and you will find plenty of stops to enjoy the woods, rocks, moss, and water. And if you like photography, you will be playing a catch up with the rest of your non-photographer group a lot.
