A close up of a Strangler Fig photographed in the beautiful Kauai, Hawaii.

These plants have a tough life of surviving where getting to light is difficult. They start without roots of their own seeding in the bark or cracks of other trees, grow their roots, envelope the "strangled" tree, and grow upwards to reach sunlight. The host tree may or may not die and the outer shell may actually help it be more sturdy.
