Locked Gate in Fort Mississauga
A gate leading inside the earthworks in Fort Mississauga, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Fort Mississauga was built between 1814 and 1816 at the mouth of the Niagara River. It is a square defensive tower set within star-shaped earthworks.
Niagara-on-the-Lake was established in 1779 and was originally called Butlersburg. It was renamed to Newark in 1792 and became the first capital of Upper Canada, a province that later became Ontario. In 1797 the name was changed to Niagara and finally in 1861 the "-on-the-Lake" was added.
