Lake Erie at the Buffalo Small Boat Harbor on a winter day that could serve as Western New York's winter's signature. It was cold, barely above 20°F, it was snowing gently and the wind was blowing at 20 miles per hour. Visibility was low and the winter feel was intense. Air felt fresh.

Only a few people enjoyed the scenery - ice fishermen, two families, a crazy photographer, and a Channel 2 News cameraman. You can see one of the ice fishing huts in the background.

Unlike the few previous seasons the lake was frozen solid! There ice layer was about a foot thick with a slight coating of snow that the strong wind kept moving around into interesting patterns of ice and snow. Here, it looked like the Lake Erie was pointing at me trying to tell me something.

Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes and is named after a Native American tribe that lived on its southern shore. Most of the water flows into Lake Erie from the Detroit River. The outflow from the lake creates another wonder, the Niagara River. The western basin of Lake Erie is the home for about 26 islands, depending on current water levels. Lake Erie also provides for a regional phenomenon - lake effect snow that makes Buffalo, NY infamous for its winter storms.
