Old Mission Santa Inés, Salvang, California

Old Mission Santa Inés, Salvang, California

The first look at the chapel at Santa Inés Mission in Solvang, California and its gorgeous door made of dark rustic wood and historical metalwork. Placed inside a large stucco wall the large door is dwarfed by the size of the chapel. In this black and white photograph all color is removed further simplifying the already minimalistic scene.

Old Mission Santa Inés was founded in 1804 by Father Estévan Tapís as the 19th of Spain's 21 Franciscan missions in Alta California. It was built to evangelize the local Chumash people.

Today, it stands as a preserved National Historic Landmark and an active parish church operating right alongside Solvang's historic Danish-themed community.

Photographed with a vintage 35mm Nikon FE camera on Ultrafine Xtreme UFX 400 black and white film, developed in D-23 developer.
