While the Netherlands is globally famous for its massive network of drainage windmills, Denmark also has a rich, distinct history of windmills utilized to grind grain.

A traditional Danish windmill features an onion-shaped cap that comes sharply to a point at the center. This is to provide an internal clearance.

A traditional Dutch windmill has a cap shaped like an inverted boat or a thatched dome, presenting a much broader profile.

Another difference were the sails. Danish mills feature wooden shutters that can open and close. Classic Dutch windmills utilize lattice-frame sails with a heavy canvas stretched over them.
