Wet Spots on a Frozen Creek

Shale Creek in Shale Creek Preserve, Chestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park, New York (NY), just a few minutes from the splendid Eternal Flame Falls.

Shale Creek Preserve is enclosed between Chestnut Ridge Road (Rte 277) and Seufert Road in Orchard Park, NY. It is most known for hosting the Eternal Flame Falls, where escaping natural gas keeps a flame burning in the middle of a waterfall. The area is at the southernmost tip of Chestnut Ridge Park. It owes it's name to a thick layer of shale, up to 95 feet, that the creek cut through.

Chestnut Ridge Park is named after the many chestnut trees that used to cover the hills. The park offers plenty of hiking opportunities, there is a disc golf course in the smaller eastern part (starting right by the casino), and in winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is popular. The hill by the casino offers cladding and the toboggan chutes have been fixed and are operational again too.
