Sunrise over the rising mist of Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls, Canada looking back into the United States (USA).

Sunrise over the Horseshoe Falls

The Horseshoe Falls, frequently referred to as the Canadian Falls, located partially in the United States and partially in Canada, is where most of the Niagara River flows and falls down. In its center, water rushes at 20 miles per hour and a depth of almost 10 feet. The tallest point is 174 feet, and the depth of the river at the base is 184 feet. This wonder of nature is a good example of how much impact people can have - the volume of water is highly regulated by the two hydroelectric power plants, with the most volume going over in daytime during the peak of the tourist season.

In the photo, you can see the Horseshoe Falls at sunrise on a very early summer morning. I really wanted to capture the warm sunlight finding its way through the heavy mist of the falls. Arriving very early in the morning has yet another benefit. No matter how touristy and popular a location is, rarely do the crowds wake up early! Even at the peak of the tourist season, you will not find many people here around 6 AM. That can make for a rather unique experience allowing for a private enjoyment of a wonderful place during a wonderful time of the day! The sun gave me a bonus here too. Do you like the sliver of sunlight at the crest as much as I did when it showed up for just a few seconds before the sun disappeared in the clouds?
