With all of the waterfalls in this natural wonder it's easy to focus on those too much and forget about all of the rock around. In this photo, I wanted to focus more on the rock and on the 400-foot deep cut the Glen Creek made through it over the years and have the water pushed into background to complete the scene.
Watkins Glen is wonderful natural creation. A deep narrow glen with a rushing stream and so many cascades a waterfall lover will be in paradise! The glen's origins go back to the ice age when receding glaciers created the Seneca Valley and increased the the creek's gradient, thus also creating a series of rapids, cascades, and waterfalls.
Nature created the true wonder and people added ways to get around: walkways, stairs, tunnels, and safety walls. With all of that in place one might think the place would be the same on each visit. But that could not be further from the truth! It can be sunny, or it can rain, the water can be high or low, there can be colorful autumn leaves. There are more people one day and fewer another. Even as the sun travels across the sky the light in the gorge changes how it all looks. The differences go on and on.
And then for photographs, even if everything were the same, there would be different angles, getting close or far, finding new elements. Erosion is a beautiful thing!
