Buffalo's Erie Basin Marina always offers wonderful western views, especially at sunset. But this night started on the wild side and the show was just getting better from there. Clouds were plentiful yet thin enough to work just about perfectly with the light of the freshly set sun. The colors were more and more intense and as you can see here the sky looked like a painter went wild with a palette and a brush. The arrival of the Moondance Cat catamaran completed the picture in a perfect way.
Buffalo Main Light, often called simply Buffalo Light or Buffalo Lighthouse, is located across the Buffalo River from the Erie Basin Marina and next door to the United States Coast Guard Station. Visitors no longer have to enter the fenced off station grounds. Instead, a narrow gated path allows foot and bike access along the river. Opening hours are still enforced though.
The lighthouse was built in 1833 and replaced the original 1818 light. It served through 1914. It is 68 feet tall, and its octagonal shape gradually narrows from the bottom up. Since June 2016, a new brighter lens has been in use, a closer replica of the original from 1865.
