This was an extraordinary finale to an extraordinary sunset over the gorgeous Buffalo Mail Light. As the light in the sky dwindled the new fresnel lens became more and more prominent. Then the show peaked at right about this time and was over in seconds.
Buffalo Main Light, often called simply Buffalo Light or Buffalo Lighthouse, is located across the Buffalo River from the Erie Basin Marina and next door to the United States Coast Guard Station. Visitors no longer have to enter the fenced off station grounds. Instead, a narrow gated path allows foot and bike access along the river. Opening hours are still enforced though.
The lighthouse was built in 1833 and replaced the original 1818 light. It served through 1914. It is 68 feet tall, and its octagonal shape gradually narrows from the bottom up. Since June 2016, a new brighter lens has been in use, a closer replica of the original from 1865.
