A winter photograph of the frozen desolation on Lake Erie from Woodlawn Beach at Sunset, Hamburg, NY. Despite winter being in great contrast with fall and colors seemingly disappearing from the landscape, this photo shows that they are still to be found if one tries.

Winds worked their magic in this corner of Lake Erie this year! There were my favorite snow volcanoes at the edge of the beach and I had to get over them to get a view of the lake, the sunset, and the colors later on.

There was also an unusual amount of drift wood sticking up through the ice and snow. The whole scene looked like a spooky desolate graveyard. Remember Lion King? Elephant Graveyard came to mind.

Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes and is named after a Native American tribe that lived on its southern shore. Most of the water flows into Lake Erie from the Detroit River. The outflow from the lake creates another wonder, the Niagara River. The western basin of Lake Erie is the home for about 26 islands, depending on current water levels. Lake Erie also provides for a regional phenomenon - lake effect snow that makes Buffalo, NY infamous for its winter storms.
