Winter decorated quite a wonderland at Erie Basin Marina providing a whole different context for the lighthouse. I love the lakeshore in winter and the marina is no exception. This morning, the rising sun illuminated everything in pleasing warm light but it was all but warm, with thermometer in single digits.
Buffalo Main Light, often called simply Buffalo Light or Buffalo Lighthouse, is located across the Buffalo River from the Erie Basin Marina and next door to the United States Coast Guard Station. Visitors no longer have to enter the fenced off station grounds. Instead, a narrow gated path allows foot access along the river. Opening hours are still enforced though.
The lighthouse was built in 1833 and replaced the original 1818 light. It served through 1914. It is 68 feet tall, and its octagonal shape gradually narrows from the bottom up. Since June 2016, a new brighter lens has been in use, a closer replica of the original from 1865.
