Frozen Winter Artwork, Erie Basin Marina & Lighthouse, Buffalo, NY

Frozen Artwork

Bone-chilling morning at the Erie Basin Marina and the lighthouse despite the sunshine. Lake Erie frozen solid between the breakwater and the shore and the fence beautifully decorated for the holidays thanks to the strong cold spell.

Buffalo Main Light, often called simply Buffalo Light or Buffalo Lighthouse, is located across the Buffalo River from the Erie Basin Marina and next door to the United States Coast Guard Station. Visitors no longer have to enter the fenced off station grounds. Instead, a narrow gated path allows foot access along the river. Opening hours are still enforced though.

The lighthouse was built in 1833 and replaced the original 1818 light. It served through 1914. It is 68 feet tall, and its octagonal shape gradually narrows from the bottom up. Since June 2016, a new brighter lens has been in use, a closer replica of the original from 1865.
