Some photo projects are not too far from home. As I was heading out to the back patio to get more fire wood to fight the sustained low temperatures of January 2026, I saw that frost has taken over the glass panes on the door to create some gorgeous ice patterns. Right away, an activity detour was born and I figured there was nothing to wait for. Subjects like this can be fleeting and the time to document them is now.

I have not used my tripod in a while and my macro lens and digital camera have mostly served to digitize my cyanotype and darkroom prints. So I woke all three up, established a rough close focusing distance and started looking for engaging patterns, moving the tripod slightly sideways and using the center column to adjust hight in tiny increments.

This was one of those activities it would be so easy to get lost in and end up with too many pictures. I kept myself in check, at least in my opinion, but you may still wonder why I had to take more than one photo. That's easy. Now I can enjoy frosts masterpieces by the fireplace.
