Eternal Flame Disc Golf Course - Is Disc Golf the New Way to Hike?

June 27, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Disc Golf hole target in Chestnut Ridge County Park, number 5. A few posts back, in Of Nature and Men (Case Study: Eternal Flame Falls, Orchard Park, NY), I complained about hiking crowds with coffee cups. Little did I know there was an even bigger controversy regarding the Eternal Flame area that is most likely still not over.

Apparently, someone came up wih the great idea to turn this beautiful hiking area into a disc golf course. Really? A disc golf course in this heavily wooded deep gorge? Especially since the same park (Chestnut Ridge) already has one? I like to go for a round of disc golf once in a while myself, but do I really need two courses in one park? In my opinion one is enough!

The one already built is mostly outside of regular hiking paths whereas this one would have been right on them. For now, the controversy caused the course to be temporarily removed for reevaluation. I certainly hope the removal will become permament!

  • Disc Golf Course Review is now listing this course as extinct. I hope their use of a word that is also used with dinosaurs was user properly and no eggs will hatch.
  • The topic also caught attention of the Buffalo News in their Life section.
  • And the Orchard Park Bee had this to say.

Have fun all and watch out for UFOs!
