Artful Winter StormA fence decorated by the blizzard of 2014
January 7, 2014. In my opinion, this blizzard did not come even close to some of the infamous ones from the past, like the Blizzard of 77. It was cold though, wind chills below -25°F, strong winds resulting in extended whiteout periods, and some Buffalo, NY suburbs did fully shut down with driving bans prevalent and even a state of emergency declared here and there.
Why am I saying it was not so bad? Snow accumulation was not all that much making it easier to dig out after the storm. And maybe most important was readiness. The storm was well publicized ahead of time as it was rolling in from the west and the forecasters talked about it days ahead. As such, people were mostly where authorities wanted them. Away from the roads, warm at home. There were some power outages but I am always impressed how the utilities deal with conditions like this and can restore electricity quickly.
During a pauze in the snowfall and howling I looked out of the window and really liked how everything was wrapped in white. Wind chills or not, I really wanted a piece of the action. I put on my ski clothes, grabbed the camera ant tripod, and headed out to photograph the winter wonderland. It was not the normal sticky snow laying on branches and fences. This time, the snow was attached to everything sideways. I did not have to walk far to come upon this fence that was actually clear of snow from the top but had a layer on its western side. There was still a little bit of blue left in the sky so I quickly set up for a wide angle shot putting full focus on the fence with the two street lights balancing the front fence post and also providing nice backlight.
