Lunar Eclipse September 2015, Harvest Moon, Supermoon, Blood Moon, September 2015Lunar EclipseSeptember 2015 How many names can one full moon have? Apparently, that list is rather long. The full moon of September was called Harvest moon. See Farmers' Almanac for all of the nicknames.

It was also a Supermoon because it was close to the Earth on its orbit. It was actually a Super Supermoon because it was the biggest, closest and brightest Supermoon of the year. And yes, it also happened to feature a full lunar eclipse. It's not going to happen here for a while now. The next partial lunar eclipse visible from Buffalo, NY is going to be on January 31, 2018 at moonset and  the next total lunar eclipse is going to be on January 20, 2019 around midnight.

"This September full moon was also called a Blood Moon, because it presented the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad: four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months (full moons) apart." - EarthSky

In the Eastern Time Zone in the U. S. the timing of this even was rather convenient with the partial eclipse starting at 9:07 p.m. and the peak of the eclipse at 10:47 p.m. Sky watchers in Europe were not that fortunate having to get up around 3 a.m. I could see how the Central Time Zone or Mountain Time Zone might have been even better off with the eclipse coinciding with the moon rise, thus having the moon low on the horizon for positioning behind some interesting ground features.
