The Old Faithful, Cargill Pool Grain Elevator, Buffalo, NYThe Old FaithfulCargill Pool Grain Elevator No, I am not talking about the famous Yellowstone geyser here. I am talking about a building that is a hallmark of Buffalo's Outer Harbor and one that I love to photograph over and over. It's hard to believe how long I have not posted a photo of the Cargill Pool Grain Elevator. Today I am correcting that and reseting the clock back at zero.

What is it about this building? It's prominent, asking for attention. It, along with other grain elevator, played a vital role in Buffalo's success. It is on one of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie, and since it is on the lake's eastern shore one can enjoy a sunset view at the same time. However, it would seem I prefer more cloudy scenes as a backdrop for this industrial structure for added drama. I am sure you will see more photographs of this grain elevator on these pages.

Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you (#etbtsy)!

In this photo, several elements came together. First, the sun managed to peek under the heavy layer of clouds and beautifully lit up the grain elevator with warm light while also lightening up the clouds a bit. And to add to the moment, an inbound airplane approaching Buffalo over the waterfront positioned itself perfectly for this extended exposure shot. What a great moment!

This photo won one of the three 1st prizes in the Citybration photo contest in June 2012 and is going to be on display the
Buffalo Waterfront Photo Exhibit in the Buffalo Niagara Gallery in the Market Arcade, 617 Main Street, Buffalo, NY, through July 21, 2012.

My previous photographs from this location were taken at dusk, both on cloudy nights. For this photo, I arrived later, also on a cloudy night, and tried to capture it with more of its surroundings, namely the Gallagher beach and the bay the elevator is situated in.

I liked both the rocks in the foreground, and the elevator reflection in the water. Despite that foreground, the elevator was also very nicely lit by the surrounding light and definitely became the center of attention. And in my opinion, it did not hurt that with long exposure, the camera could see more than our own eyes. As a result, the seemingly black night sky recovered some of its daytime blue color and provided a more interesting backdrop for the photo.
