Roots & LeavesChestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park, NY
Just a couple weeks ago I was enjoying the late fall in Chestnut Ridge Park, Orchard Park, NY. As I finished photographing two of my favorite tree groups and was slowly strolling back to my car I noticed an interesting arrangement of tree roots and fallen leaves under my feet.
I really liked the lines the roots created However, something was missing. An idea came to mind to introduce motion and make the photo a bit more dynamic.
When it comes to camera motion during an open shutter when the camera has a zoom lens mounted there are quite a few options to play with. And each of those motions can result in a completely different look based on the length of the exposure as well as the speed of motion. They results can vary from a slightly blurry recognizable image to a complete abstract with all beyond recognition. The arrangement of dark and light areas as well as colors can completely change the outcome too. Thus, even a minor perspective adjustment before capturing a photo may mean one will leave with a different interpretation of the scene.
Rather than trying to describe all of this, look through the few examples below demonstrating a few of the possible techniques.
