Jamestown and Chautauqua Lake, Part II

July 07, 2020  •  Leave a Comment

Today I am closing off the two-part Lake Chautauqua series with a set of black and white photographs. The star is clearly the beautiful Chautauqua Bell steamboat that we were lucky to see in front of the Harbor Hotel.

While we had plans to stop by both the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel as well as the home location of Chautauqua Belle we got lucky and saw the steam ship in action loading passengers at the hotel.

Some moments just make photographers instantly happy and this sure was one of those moments for me. As soon as I saw the boat I knew what my photo of the day would be. It looked gorgeous and I had a classic camera loaded with black and white film ready to go. The sky was blue with white puffy clouds. What could possibly be better? My focus just turned to making the most of the situation.

I usually prefer photos devoid of people and that is still what I have selected for the travel gallery of my website. However, I could not resist this documentary photo of the crowd, which reminded me of days gone by.

Only later did I realize my luck. At the time of the visit I had no idea about the different routes the steam boat takes neither did I review its schedule. I am so grateful luck was on my side on this beautiful summer day on the lake.

The rest of the photographic day was simply an add-on. I had no expectations that anything could possibly top this experience for me. We moved away from the lake and explored the River Walk in Jamestown. This beautiful location next to a railroad caught my eye.

The whole day featured a truly wonderful photogenic sky. I could not have asked for better. As a result, pretty much anything and everything looked wonderful with such a backdrop.

Last week, we returned to Chautauqua Lake but unfortunately, the boat was still beached at its home location due to the pandemic rules. It even had to skip its July 4 schedule. Based on the latest on their web site, it should be back in the water the next weekend. To a successful summer season!
