Since my very first visit to the Niagara Falls many years ago I've been captivated by the trees living literally on the edge in the most inhospitable conditions I can imagine. A tiny island barely accommodating a handful of trees by the edge of the Horseshoe Falls seems like a tough place to live even in summer being constantly attacked by the Upper Rapids of the Niagara River as well as the moisture of the ever present mist. Then in winter, it seems simply impossible. Yet, they are there, year after year wearing a frozen white coat. Is it that combination that makes it possible? The ice coating the trees head to toe protecting them from the inhospitable cold?
