Reviving my other, a bit neglected website today. A few years back, I started timelessbuffalo.com as a way to showcase Buffalo, NY in black and white only. While the black and white theme provides a consistent look the choice of tools is quite varied anywhere from a digital SLR to a rudimentary pinhole camera. Check it out, maybe you will find some different takes on your favorite sites in the city!

This day, my camera of choice was the Nikon FE loaded with another classic, the Kodak Tri-X black and white film. I was out and about around Buffalo trying out various color filters to compare their effects on the black and white film. For the most part, I wanted to see the difference between the red and orange filters. They both darken the blue sky and lighten red tones. The red one simply has a stronger, much stronger effect.
Buffalo Main Light gets photographed a lot and most of the photographs are from the Erie Basin Marina, especially at sunset. And for a good reason, it's quite a view. So here, I chose the opposite perspective shooting from the Bottle Light across the Main Light towards downtown Buffalo. You can see the city hall just to the right of the Bottle and One Seneca on the very right.

And then there are these beautiful colorful huts that just beg to be photographed on a vivid color medium. So again, I thought why not see what happens when the color is removed. Sure, the scene certainly changes its look, but I rather like the outcome. The filter effect helped with a more dramatic interpretation making the huts stand out brightly under a darker sky.

Conclusion? Since this test of mine, my primary sunny day filter has been the orange one. It provides a more subtle effect. However, I still carry the red one too for those occasions where more punch is needed. And the final step? If even the red one does not cut it, why not reach for infrared?
