It's Edward!

Photography is a lot about being at the right place at the right time. Sometimes, it can be planned, other times, a dose of luck is needed. This day, it was all about luck. Or was it?! As they say, luck favors the prepared.

I was dropping my daughter off for a birthday party close to downtown Buffalo and had two hours of downtime before picking her up. Of course, I threw a camera in the trunk just in case I'd decide not to go back home in between. Weather was beautiful, the sky was filled with competition grade clouds and returning home was quickly crossed out as an option.

I hung the cameras down my shoulders and set towards Canalside on foot. First, I enjoyed some urban photography along Southpark Avenue, passed by the NFTA Metro Terminal, and crossed over to the river with the intention to make a left and come up with some new compositions of the terminal on the river side. Before making that left, I just quickly glanced to the right towards Canalside and my plans changed instantly! Not only did I head to the right I picked up my pace. Why?

Edward M Cotter was putting on quite the show right by USS Little Rock with all of its guns on and shooting fountains of water in all directions.

I had seen it in many pictures before but luck was never on my side to see it for myself. Neither could I ever figure out where everyone else was getting the inside scoop from to get to see it. And here he was, Edward himself, with me right by with two cameras over my shoulders. Could it be?

Yes, it was and into action I went. I shot several black and white frames on my medium format Mamiya 645. Then I finished a black and white roll that was in my 35mm Nikon FE. And since the fireboat was still in action I figured why not grab a few shots in color. I quickly loaded Kodak Portra 400 into the FE and took a few more shots.

And then the show was over, guns off, and Edward M Cotter headed up the river to its dock. Thank you!
