Zeiss Ikon Contessa35mm Rangefinder Today we're heading to a place I've visited many times as it grew on me over time. Knox Farm has quite a bit to offer, from its woods, fenced off fields, ponds, through the rural setting of its barns to the beautiful red cottages. It is too bad these may not survive for much longer. But maybe it is this status that drives me back even more frequently to document them before they disappear.

The first one here is my favorite of the bunch. This day, the winter setting definitely worked with the old red paint very well. The contrast was excellent especially since sun played along too. And I felt that the camera in my hands was the prfect tool to capture the scene. It was an old Zeiss Ikon Contessa loaded with Kodak Colorplus 200 film.

Does the cottage in the second photo seem familiar? I admit, It's the same one and from almost the same angle after walking forward for a bit and using my legs as a zoom. Despite their similarity I feel they're both different enough to show them side by side here. What do you think? Does one of them speak to you more than the other?

Next, we're heading to a tiny cottage that stands by a field that was a home to a heard of sheep for quite a while. Unfortunately, those are not there any more and the fate of the cottage is quite uncertain too. While the larger cottage above is my definite favorite at Knox Farm I always struggle with this small one. How does one capture it so that its spirit shows through? On this sunny winter day I got some help from snow. It seemed to be the missing ingredient.

To close today's red cottage set let's look at one that's rather large. The bright winter sun and the sprinkle of snow on the ground did not hurt here either. Winter might just be the best season to show these red cottages off.

And that closes our trip to rural Western New York, or at least an old farm preserved as a state park that's supposed to remind us of the days past.
