Welcome to Buffalo, New York

This photo expedition was to try something new and to add photographs with a different mood to my Buffalo photo gallery. It was my first venture into night photography on film. And I decided to go for a true night, with the sky gone black and my focus on urban landscapes full of light and shadows from various sources of artificial light.

I headed to Buffalo's First Ward, and walked around guided by highlights from my past daytime explorations. As I moved from one to the next I kept my eyes open for new opportunities. Eventually, I walked my way towards this fantastic commercial for visiting the city of Buffalo:

I know, it is probably not what the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce would choose for its poster but the photo is full of Buffalo's history. A standing grain elevator in the background and a leftover of one colorfully lit up in the foreground turned into a sculpture symbolizing reuse. I really like it when new owners get ceative with what can be done with these symbols of the past. And as shown with some of the other ones they often don't even have to be brought down as long as they're still structurally sound.

Moving just a few feet this wonderful mural serves as another wonderful reminder of the city's history and one of its companies.

And even for the final image we're staying on location for an interesting mix of elements. The steel sculpture of a bison definitely fits in as a symbol of the city of Buffalo and its steel mill history. The grain elevator in the background is Buffalo's signature. And then there is the new addition, the old red double-decker bus. I love it there as it adds an eye-catching third element to the photo and it can also symbolize the rebirth of Buffalo and specifically its new micro brewery business as it will serve as the The Buffalo Brew Bus for brewery tours.

So that's the first glimpse into the city of Buffalo at night. Needless to say, I am hooked and will definitely be going back for more. I love the color palette the Cinestill 800T film gave me but since that is  mostly out of stock everywhere I may have to try different films too and that can make it all even more interesting. Stay tuned.
