Squaw Island Fun

Squaw Island Bridge in Buffalo, NY at Sunset with an oncoming car.Sunset behind the Squaw Island Bridge This was a great evening full of photographic fun. As almost always, plans got me started and serendipity took care of the rest.

I headed to the island to photograph Cheraw that was docked by the water treatment plant. Boats, trains, and airplanes are my favorite subjects too. Once I found a nice vantage point and took care of that photo, I had a few sunset ideas but since I had recently photographed sunset over the Niagara River from the northern tip of the Squaw Island, I wanted something different this evening.

The steel construction against the colorful sky caught my attention and I moved around the bridge to find a perspective I'd like. I wanted to avoid the popular central position that provides a full horizontal symmetry to get something different.

Standing on the left side of the bridge allowed me to get more of the northwestern sky in the photo where the most color was. I liked what I was getting. BUt then when a car passed by and I had to hop out of the way this idea was born. I positioned myself back into the lane and waited for the next car, making sure to use a bit faster shutter to avoid motion blur. I got lucky and did not have to wait too long. I really liked the result. The photo with the car feels more alive and also better tells the story. It was the end of the day and most people were leaving the island heading home.

It was getting dark but the island kept begging for more exploration and I listened. I had some fun with dandelions, and just walked around. I also checked out the construction at Broderick Park, another area along Buffalo's waterfront getting a facelift. So wonderful to see all of the improvements!

I also waited for the Peace Bridge illumination to kick in and had fun photographing the different lighting patterns with both long and short exposures. But that is a story for another day.

When I finished and turned around, the scene in front of me screamed to be photographed. The wind-free mirror of the Black Rock Canal was providing a perfect reflection of the Squaw Island Bridge and I also liked the golden glow from the distant lights. The city light pollution and a long exposure turned the night sky into this deep blue. And finally, several cars that crossed the bridge provided a nice tail light trail all along the bridge. Very nice ending to my night on Squaw Island.

As you saw in my previous post, this still was not the end of my night and I had some more fun at the Cargill Pool Grain Elevator on Lake Erie. What a wonderful night!

Have fun exploring and working your locations!
