Concrete Giants of Elevator AlleyGrain Elevators of Buffalo, NY
Having been a fan of the Buffalo grain elevators for years this was an experience like no other! So first, let's give credit where credit is due. First and foremost I thank to the owner of Silo City, Rick Smith, for making this possible by allowing public tours of the property. Many other places like this are locked up with access only for the privileged or after paying a hefty fee. Second, I thank to Explore Buffalo for their many wonderful tours, the Silo City Vertical included! A wonderful learning experience combined with fun photography time. And if you are wondering already, the answer is no, these are not the only two photographs I had fun capturing and would like to share with you. In their time, more will come.
The tour started at the parking lot by the American and Perot grain elevators, took us through and up the American Elevator, conveyed us over to the top of the Perot Malting Elevator, and led back down, with a parting stop at the Marine A Elevator. The views were impressive inside and out, with plethora of photogenic material to work with. Words can't really do it justice so please, enjoy the photos.
Click them once to be taken to their image gallery, click them again to go full screen. And of course, if you select these or other photographs to be printed and hung on your walls as a permanent decoration I won't mind at all.

Covered Bridge Covered with ColorsAllegany State Park
I've been a fan of covered bridges for a long time. No matter where we go we always search the Internet for covered bridges in the area. Covered bridges add to landscape photographs too. They're not a man-made distraction, like many other structures, they add to the landscape and often become the focal point, yet, not stealing from their natural surroundings. They seem to fit in very well. Maybe it's their wooden structure that fits in with trees, maybe it is something else, but I sure am always glad to find one. Combine a covered bridge with fall colors and things get even better.
That was the case during our recent visit to Allegany State Park. After quickly orienting ourselves, since we had not visited in a long time, and grabbing some chili, we circled the Red House Lake and came to the Thomas L. Kelly covered bridge, resulting in an immediate photo stop. The sun was going in an out of clouds resulting in different and quickly changing lighting conditions. I always got my composition ready and then waited, watching the clouds above. Often, I only got a few seconds before the sun disappeared again.
After exploring one side shooting against backlight I crossed the bridge, captured a few photos of the interior focusing on the symmetry of the structure, and moved on to exterior from the opposite site, this time using more of a front lighting. The colors, the bridge, the clouds, the lighting, I was very happy with what the scene offered. It was quite a sight and I hope you'll all enjoy today's photo too!

Misty BarnsKnox Farm, East Aurora, NY
This has been a beautiful fall season. So many predictions called for a sub-par showing due to the summer drought but nature had a different opinion, ignored all of the naysayers and put on quite a show. It's also been a bit busy for me on multiple fronts and as a result I did not have a chance to enjoy it to the fullest. Still, there's been much to look at all around, whether in urban areas, in the suburbs, or out in the countryside. Of course, colorful foliage goes best with the outdoors in my opinion thus my choice would be all of the local parks, as well as the countryside around Buffalo, NY.
Today, I'd like to share a couple fall photographs from a local state park, the beautiful Knox Farm in East Aurora, NY. Colors are definitely the advertising feature of the season, however, what would fall be without some beautiful fog? With its off-white color it contrasts all of the colors around and helps them stand out that much more. It also provides mood for any landscape scene. An otherwise ordinary setting can become extraordinary even with just a moderate dose of fog. Add fog to an already picturesque scene and you get something very, very special.

Fields & Trees of FallBuffalo Southtowns
Fall came, colors started appearing all around in Western New York, excitement built up, and I got sick. I know, quite a buzz kill. But no worries, I am not going to bore you with complaints of my misery over the three plus weeks. Instead, I am heading towards an unexpected happy ending. Once the disease released its grasp of me just a tiny bit, the draw of the outdoors became strong. Not even a rainy day could hold me back any more after such a long forced break. Rain or not, in the car I went and rushed out before the light of the day expired. A vague plan was in my head loosely based on past driving through the area just past the suburbs of Buffalo, NY.
I remembered a few small roads turning off of the roads I traveled before. This evening the time came to make the turns and explore. And while I had relatively high expectations what I discovered blew my mind. The landscape along these roads was gorgeous, and the roads themselves had a lot to show off too. Just driving up and down the many hills and turning left and right on the winding roads not following a rectangular grid was a welcome change to the daily routine.

And the rain? It really was just a drizzle and I did not mind at all. I remembered to put the hood on my lens, usually used to shield the lens from the sun, however, I regularly use it more as a lens umbrella. I stopped many times, pointing the camera at the landscape around, as well as the roller coaster roads moving ... with the land, not through the land ... do you remember this quote?
"The road didn't cut through the land like that interstate. It moved with the land, it rose, it fell, it curved. Cars didn't drive on it to make great time. They drove on it to have a great time." - Sally, Cars (2006)
