Adding to the moody collection of black and white photographs from Buffalo, NY captured with a wooden pinhole camera. It's an evening photo of the beautiful Buffalo City Hall across the Erie Basin Marina. It was also fun explaining to a few people what the heck I was up to in this digital age of instant gratification. Where is the picture? Where do you look? How do you know what you are taking a picture of? :-)

The Old Faithful, ... Cargill Pool Grain Elevator

The Old Faithful, Cargill Pool Grain Elevator, Buffalo, NYThe Old FaithfulCargill Pool Grain Elevator No, I am not talking about the famous Yellowstone geyser here. I am talking about a building that is a hallmark of Buffalo's Outer Harbor and one that I love to photograph over and over. It's hard to believe how long I have not posted a photo of the Cargill Pool Grain Elevator. Today I am correcting that and reseting the clock back at zero.

What is it about this building? It's prominent, asking for attention. It, along with other grain elevator, played a vital role in Buffalo's success. It is on one of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie, and since it is on the lake's eastern shore one can enjoy a sunset view at the same time. However, it would seem I prefer more cloudy scenes as a backdrop for this industrial structure for added drama. I am sure you will see more photographs of this grain elevator on these pages.

Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you (#etbtsy)!

In this photo, several elements came together. First, the sun managed to peek under the heavy layer of clouds and beautifully lit up the grain elevator with warm light while also lightening up the clouds a bit. And to add to the moment, an inbound airplane approaching Buffalo over the waterfront positioned itself perfectly for this extended exposure shot. What a great moment!

This photo won one of the three 1st prizes in the Citybration photo contest in June 2012 and is going to be on display the

My previous photographs from this location were taken at dusk, both on cloudy nights. For this photo, I arrived later, also on a cloudy night, and tried to capture it with more of its surroundings, namely the Gallagher beach and the bay the elevator is situated in.

I liked both the rocks in the foreground, and the elevator reflection in the water. Despite that foreground, the elevator was also very nicely lit by the surrounding light and definitely became the center of attention. And in my opinion, it did not hurt that with long exposure, the camera could see more than our own eyes. As a result, the seemingly black night sky recovered some of its daytime blue color and provided a more interesting backdrop for the photo.

Colorful Fall Skyline Drive View, Shenandoah National Park, VirginiaColorful Fall Skyline Drive ViewShenandoah National Park, Virginia As another wonderful day of hiking and enjoying the outdoors, trails, colors, and waterfalls approached its end it was time to enjoy another famous feature of the Shenandoah National Park. All along Skyline Drive one can get beautiful distant views both to the east and west. That makes the park great for both early morning sunrise visits as well as late sunsets after other park activities.

We pulled over to one of the many pullouts along Skyline Drive that offered a nice distant view as well as plenty of foreground colors. I thoroughly enjoyed the clouds and light that nature had in store this evening. Unlike a featureless blue sky would have the clouds and haze darkened the background, diffused the light, and created shafts of light illuminating the land below. All of that combined helped the colors stand out boldly, whether the yellow grass in the immediate foreground or the yellow, orange, and red tones of the foliage in the middle ground. What a view, so easy to get lost in it with no worries, just the view and the gentle breeze.

Praying Mantis, Shenandoah National Park, VirginiaPraying MantisShenandoah National Park, Virginia While enjoying this spectacle we spotted another object of interest. A beautiful praying mantis was enjoying the low barrier wall and basking in the late sun. These insects are so  different than anything else. They're large but not bulky, very thin indeed but still with substance to them. They have so many fine features. And apparently they are the only insect that can swivel its head from side to side. And look at this one and its camouflage. Sure, the rock wall does not exactly help showcase that feature here but look at the background colors and at the photo above. With all of the yellow grasses around and some green here and there had this mantis been sitting on a straw behind the wall we might have never noticed it at all!

A New Take on the South Grand Island Bridge

South Grand Island Bridge behind Trees, Buffalo, NYSouth Grand Island Bridge behind TreesBuffalo, NY

Today, we are going about a year back. This photograph is from October 2015 and one cloudy morning on the banks of the mighty Niagara River. It's from a location I visited several times in the past and enjoyed at dawn, at dusk, in various weather conditions, and photographed using various techniques. This particular morning seemed a bit bland at first, but that just meant a new opportunity, an opportunity to find a new perspective. And I found it behind this beautiful old tree through which the South Grand Island Bridge looked great!

Enjoy the beauty that surrounds you (#etbtsy)!

More South Grand Island Bridge Photos:

Sunrise over the South Grand Island Bridge and Niagara River looking from Grand Island towards Tonawanda, NY and Buffalo.Sunrise over the South Grand Island BridgeThe South Grand Island Bridge takes the I-190 from Tonawanda, New York (NY) to Grand Island, New York (NY) over the Niagara River. Despite some efforts and successes in the downtown Buffalo sections of the I-190, the bridge remains a toll bridge. The bridge consists of two truss arch bridges. It is operated by the New York State Thruway Authority. The bridge has a 93-foot clearance. While the twin bridges were targeted to be identical there are some differences between the one built in 1930s and the other from 1960s, like stone vs. steel faced cutwaters, different guard rails, and more.

In this photo you see the bridge in the early morning of a late autumn day as seen looking from the Grand Island down the I-190 towards Tonawanda and Buffalo, New York (NY). The great Niagara River is definitely a body of water demanding respect. Not only is it rather wide but the flow is rather fast too. I think that somehow makes the bridge more impressive too. Being there in the morning before the sun comes up so late in the year adds a dose of freshness and the lack of people and traffic around makes the hum of the river the most prominent sound.
