Trees Climbing Up the HillMoravian Rolling Hills
Today we're heading out on a beautiful hike through the rolling hills of Southern Moravia, Czech Republic. It started down in a valley following a dirt road winding between a field and some woods.
In one of the curves I looked to the left and back and saw a distant patch of trees in the middle of a large field. It looked like a creature trying to climb the slope. But the creature was in a shadow cast by the clouds traveling the sky, traveling rather fast though. I found my composition and patiently waited. As the clouds moved on sunshine hit the patch and all looked great. One press of the shutter release, the pleasing sound of the shutter swishing by, and the moment was preserved.
There was so much photogenic landscape around. The gentle curves of the hills, the greenery of the field, the blues of the sky, and the streaming clouds providing the cherry on top of it all. And that was just the start of the hike with so much sure to come.

An unusual Sunday post from me, but why not? I've kept coming back to this same photograph for a while now. I usually try to leave people, cars, and other distractions out of my photographs but as I framed this shot on my Nikon FE film camera and noticed the tractor trailer pulling onto Ohio Street I figured why not? I prefocused on the crosswalk and waited a few seconds. And you can see the result here. After the semi left the scene I took another photo. Out of the two, this is my choice.

The snowfall finally shifted a little bit north and made its way to Orchard Park, NY. It was time to do two things. First, I found my winter clothes, packed up my camera gear, and headed to the Chestnut Ridge Park to witness nature's clean up operation. All of the gray chaos got covered up under a layer of snow and all of a sudden, everything looked so much cleaner, simpler, better.
I did not head out at random, I had the location in mind since my last visit. However, there was not snow back then and I only had my wide angle zoom with me. I was not able to make the photograph I had in my mind. This time, I came prepared with the tools necessary for materializing the image.

Oh, and what was the other thing I had to do? Give my home page a new look. It was time to follow the natural cycle and set the colorful images of the fall aside, replacing them with the white look of winter.

Dancing Trees in the FallImpressionistic Chestnut Ridge
The 2016 season of color is over and even though it has just ended I already miss it. And it was a beautiful fall! My schedule did not allow me to be as active outdoors as I would have preferred but I still had enough opportunities to soak it all in. And even now as the colors fade and nature gets ready for its white coat there are still opportunities for colorful photographs.
For this photo outing I headed out with one specific idea in mind. I wanted to use camera motion to transform my photographs from literal depictions to something more moody, something you might see getting lost in a moment and zoning out not really focusing your eyes on any particular thing.
I even had a specific group of trees in mind. They're in the Chestnut Ridge Park and I call them the dancing trees. They're all different shapes, leaning in different directions, taking on different formations as one moves past them, appearing to dance. They are on my list of regularly revisited locations.
However, as I headed towards them in the drizzle another group of trees caught my eye. An alley of large aged oak trees was begging for attention and possibly the same intended treatment. Here, the arrangement was very different though. The trees did not appear random at all, they were regularly spaced and in lines, posing a challenge for the composition I was seeking. I kept moving around trying to find an angle that would break the regularity and give me a more engaging pattern. Eventually I found what I was looking for and spent several minutes fine tuning the perspective with a dance of my own, moving even so slightly in all directions watching what laid in front of me through the viewfinder.

On a Caneadea Country RoadA Subaru Commercial
Park lands in the fall are great, so much natural beauty. But for me, possibly as a side effect of our annual road trips, even getting to the parks may be rather beautiful if one keeps their eyes open. Quite often, the rolling hills of the countryside on the way to a destination can quietly rival the destinations themselves.
And, as you have most certainly noticed if you've been on this blog before, I don't necessarily try to make that countryside look fully natural. I love the human additions to the landscape, whether it be farms, barns, covered bridges, and even roads, whether unpaved dirt roads or not so romantic asphalt paved roads.
For today's post, I have decided to share a few roads moving with the land, not through the land, that are close to home here in Western New York. And yes, I have even dared to insert a car into a landscape photograph.
