Welcome to my blog! Read about photography, film photography in 35mm, medium, and large formats, pinhole photography, about darkroom printing, alternative photographic processes, and more. Thank you for visiting!
Back into the darkroom today for some traditional black and white wet prints. And for the subject matter we're not going too far from the home front today. The Birdsong Park is right here in Orchard Park, NY almost within a stone's throw for me.

The park has several walking paths and has something to offer in all seasons. When foliage is not present, it just begs for a black and white treatment. And that's exactly what I did on this day. Had a Yashica LM twin lens reflex camera loaded with Fomapan 400 in my hand and looked for interesting features that would look great under the wonderful blue sky with some clouds around for added interest.

To help the sky stand out better I've placed an orange filter on the taking lens. That darkens the blues while leaving the white clouds alone.
The camera shoots 6cm x 6cm (2¼" x 2¼") square format photos on 120 film. You can see the photo as originally shot in my Swamp Trees post. In the darkroom, I decided to do something different. I selected the Ilford 4" x 6" Portfolio Paper, or the Postcard Paper. It allows for a traditional darkroom print on its face while having the standard postcard layout pre-printed on the back.

It's the middle of summer so who would not like a brief cooldown, especially if it's just virtual? From a location point of view we're not heading far from the locations featured in the last few posts but we're traveling back in time to February.

I got up early to catch the morning blues at a wonderful location in downtown Buffalo where I like to return to often. Early mornings always have the advantage of being almost people free. Winter mornings seem to amplify this further, especially if it's really cold. Conditions were supposed to be good for some morning fog, which helped me set the alarm for an early wake up call.
The fog turned up to be so subtle that it was barely visible but combined with the morning hour and streetlights I was very happy with the scenes in front of me.

The best part? Unlike my previous attempt, the lamps did not shut off the second I clicked the shutter button!

In the excitement of the moment, I photographed the wonderful scene on two different cameras and three different films. I've finally got the third roll developed and scanned and that's why the delay and a sequel.

Don't be surprised if I relive the moment with you again on these pages. I can't wait to bring these negatives to the darkroom and make some wonderful looking traditional wet prints. And there are so many creative opportunities! I'd like to try selenium toning and I'd like to give Lith printing a shot.

Let's continue the exploration of Buffalo, NY with a film camera in hand and an experimental color film loaded in it. Yes, this is a Part II to The 70s Look from January and a walk around downtown Buffalo with my Pentax Spotmatic loaded with ADOX Color Implosion.

From Canalside, we are moving to the neighboring Naval & Military Park where I was hoping the look of the experimental film would match the old vessels on display.

So what do you think? Does the Lo-Fi look of the film go with the scene? I will admit, I rather like it.

Yes, I've been away for a while. It was time for a summer vacation, for visiting family, for a road trip, and for leaving the internet behind for a while and just enjoying the present.

Can you still imagine existing without a data plan on your cell phone? We sure got used to it, didn't we? On my recent 2-week European trip I performed a social study on myself and went without data. And look, I am still here and doing just fine. The places we stayed all had wifi so it was not a complete separation from the internet but once we hit the road or the city sidewalks I was free to enjoy what was around me and living in the moment. I enjoyed it and will do it again. And even being back home and on data again I find myself less and less inclined to go virtual.
Anyway, what should one post after coming back from a trip? How about a photo of something that we saw quite a bit of. Even though this one is in the U.S. and I now wish I grabbed a similar shot in each country we traveled through. Maybe next year?

PS: Even though this is a 2019 photo, it's not possible any more. The gas station got sold and the pumps have been replaced.
