Road Trip: Route 66 Part IV: Cadillac Ranch

March 13, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

Texas became the 28th state to join the United States on December 29, 1845. The capital city is Austin. The highest point is Guadalupe Peak at 8,749 feet.

Cadillac Ranch, Route 66 Roadside, Amarillo, TexasCadillac RanchRoute 66 Roadside Off to the 16th day on the road leaving New Mexico in the rearview mirror and entering the Lone Star State. However, not leaving the Mother Road just yet. There were still a few roadside attractions to be seen and miles of the road to be followed, and of course, being in Texas, some steak to be had.

One such attraction awaited just outside Amarillo, TX - the Cadillac Ranch built all the way back in 1974, thus just one year short of its 40th birthday at the time of our visit.

While not a natural attraction but rather a work of art, it fit the whole Route 66 experience rather well I thought, providing an unexpected sight in the middle of a large field, in the middle of nowhere.

Located on a private property public is welcome not only to visit but to bring their spray paint and alter the original work of art to their own liking - however, don't expect longevity.

Cadillac Ranch is artwork created by the Ant Farm, displayed here solely for the purpose of documenting and sharing our road trip experience along Route 66 in Texas.

Morning Fog

March 06, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

The weather forecast called for fog the night before and a friend was visiting who also likes photography. A plan was born to meet at the marina well before sunrise. I did not want to miss the brief moments of colors at daybreak and found myself on the waterfront well before 6 a.m. in a pitch black darkness. Camera bag on my waist and a tripod over my shoulder and off I went exploring planning the morning shoot in my head.

It did not look like there was much fog, definitely not the dense kind that would have been obvious, but it was still too dark to see what might be sitting over the water. First, I headed for the Naval Park as there above the ships the sky was showing the first signs of blue tones. Buffalo River was acting strangely too. However, this is all for another day and another story.

Dreamy Lighthouse, Buffalo Main Light in Fog, Buffalo, NYDreamy LighthouseBuffalo Main Light Once I enjoyed the river and the ships I headed back to the marina to see what might happen over downtown or the lake. I met up with my friend and we spent the rest of the morning together, a rather unusual session for me. I'm usually all on my own for my photo explorations.

Once there was enough light the views to the west were beautiful, dreamy, and I kept getting lost in my thoughts just staring into the distance, watching the birds wake up, and listening to their morning calls, occasionally checking behind me for fireworks over the city. And they happened, very briefly, probably not even for a full minute. This morning however, I was more in tune with the hazy view of the lake, the distant water break and the always beautiful Buffalo Main Light, which looked different yet.

And then, just for a few seconds, the western glow rewarded me with the best view of the morning, at least in my opinion. I like minimalism and often intentionally seek scenes like that. This morning, the scene developed right in front of me though. Looking straight out over the lake over one of the break waters I already enjoyed a wonderful view of the wall peeking from the fog just gently interrupting the almost seamless transition from water into sky. When a subtle hint of a colorful glow entered the scene  I was happy, the early morning wake up was so worth it, yet again!

More Winter in Hamburg, NY

March 01, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

Sometimes things just come together. I felt they did in the scene that unfolded in front of me on a winter day in Hamburg, NY as I was exploring the village with an old-fashioned film camera loaded with a black and white film in my hand. I wandered the streets trying to capture old subjects in new light (and on "old" medium), looking for new subjects and new angles, eventually finding my way to the Centennial Gardens Park and 18 Mile Creek Overlook. Walking down the steps trying not to use them as a toboggan I found myself facing the scene below. All in winter white, all black and white, with the creek disappearing behind a bend and hiding behind trees of various shapes. The shutter clicked and the suspense was on to wait until the roll was finished, developed, enjoyed for the first time, then scanned and enjoyed again. Sit back, relax, imagine you're standing there by the trees watching the water flow, getting lost in your own thoughts with the rest of the world disappearing, even if just for a brief moment.

One More White while Appropriate

February 24, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

A white post while at least the calendar is right. I know, it looks nothing like this outside these days but it fits in at least seasonally. Wandering about Hamburg, NY with an old-fashioned Nikon FE the white tones of winter were just the perfect recipe for black and white film.

Book Cover

Cliff's Foot, Lake Erie Shore, Hamburg, NYCliff's FootLake Erie Shore, Hamburg, NY It was a calm, unusually calm evening along the shore of Lake Erie. The water barely moving, no other sounds to be heard. A cloud layer arriving from the west surrounded everything in shades of gray. Daylight was quickly surrendering the rule to the darkness of the night. Threatening cliffs rising high up from the lake. And there, high above the lake a hint of light flickered through the trees, momentarily disappearing, then showing up again. Then a screech, and all quiet again filling the air with suspense. What could it possibly be, such a strange sound?

As it got darker yet a bit of chill arrived on the scene and it was increasingly difficult to keep warm. A slight breeze blew over the lake disturbing the total silence as the lake responded with a slight rocking motion adding a gentle hum. And then that sound again, stronger than before, yet even more mysterious. An animal? Maybe two heavy pieces of metal rubbing against each other? Who would be causing that at this time of the day though? Or a person in distress?

Such was the end to this day with the Hamburg Beach and Lake Erie providing plenty of material for one's imagination to go wild. Just stare towards the distant horizon, shift focus to the cliff as the gentle waves play at its foot, and then let your gaze travel up the cliff towards the lights of the houses there. Not difficult to imagine a series of mysterious events happening.

We have the mood, we have the set up, we have the book cover. Now we need the story to be finished ...
