Lower Emery Falls in the Fall
As I finally took some time to explore the Emery County Park this year I also finally found two of its several waterfalls. The tributaries to the Cazenovia Creek feature several of them, hard to say how many for now. The information I found lists four different waterfalls on two different tributaries. The waterfall pictured here is not listed though. Too small to count? Maybe, but I still liked it and even more than its bigger cousin up the stream - The Emery Falls.
Over time I had grown to like side or partial side views of waterfalls more than head on photos. As such, that was the first angle I explored here too. No matter what I did though I could not fall in love with what I saw in the viewfinder. Eventually I made my way to this spot and decided this was the winner for the day. Funny how that works.
The fallen leaves were the fading sign of the late season of color since trees were already mostly bare and the fallen leaves were losing their charm in most spots. Here, I thought they still looked nice, were in a good shape, and were served in just the right portions.

Now let's watch nature turn white and have fun with one of the biggest natural contrasts of all, when in a short period of time vivid colors are traded for whiteness.
Yellow Alley at Emery Park
I've commented on revisiting the same locations on my pages several times (Revisit Your Locations, Revisiting Locations Revisited) and here I am again.
There is just something special about coming back. Not only is each time physically different based on season, time of day, weather, but I also look for different things. I may be interested in wide views at one time while searching for macro elements the next. I may be focusing on lines and patterns once but on color the next time.
However, even the physical differences can be rather significant in just a week or two. Especially the beautiful fall season seems to pass way too quickly. As such, you could almost visit locations each day and see differences not so subtle.
The first photo here is from October 16, 2012. Compare that to the second one taken on September 29, approximately two weeks earlier.
Emery Park Alley in Summer
It's also really interesting how moving even 100 feet can result in a completely different seasonal colors. In the Emery Park (South Wales, NY), the trees around the north-eastern road trail the rest of the park by at least a week maybe two. And it is probably a reoccurring theme since even Google Maps in the satellite view show that. You can clearly see the green area surrounded by colorful foliage.
This is probably one of my last fall themed posts. The season has progressed and there is not much green around any more, trees are mostly yellow, orange, red, or bare.
Fall in Emery Park
This early morning photo is actually a few days old, taken at Emery Park in South Wales, NY, not far from East Aurora or Buffalo. It was a cloudy morning just about perfect for wandering through the woods. While I did not get the light piercing through the foliage providing strong back light, I did get plenty of diffused light and some moisture in the air to saturate the colors for me.
As you can see, the creek here is a testament to the very dry summer season we've had here. I was lucky to find some water sitting there, and in one area actually found a gentle flow.
I really liked the contrast in color. The oranges and reds mostly fallen down in the creek bed while the yellow leaves still hung up on their trees. And there still was my favorite part, a gentle sprinkle of greens for color contrast and depth of the scene!
Have fun with colors while they're here!
Colors of Buffalo Zoo
It's the season of color and not even the Buffalo Zoo can avoid it. Their trees are showing colors and many of the grasses look great too. It makes for an even more special visit with different backdrops to photograph your family and friends, or to take pictures of the Zoo grounds.
The gate closes at 4 PM these days and you can stay till 5.
The Halloween spirit is also clearly present now with some special exhibits!
