Zeiss Ikon Contessa, Folding Rangefinder CameraZeiss Ikon ContessaFolding Rangefinder Camera I really love black and white photography and recently mostly in its analog form as it gives me the opportunity to make darkroom prints, thus going from start to finish without touching the computer. However, all of the colors of the fall season were an encouragement to step out of my comfort zone yet again and try some color. No, I would not be able to take it all the way to an analog print but I could enjoy the different color palette film gives and could also do the final step digitally and still have a print. There was also a new camera I wanted to test drive. I got couple rolls of Kodak color film, one Portra and one Ektar, and headed out several times. It always surprises me how long a roll of 36 frames feels.

Even though I am not set up to do darkroom prints in color I did not want to give up on the home development though. I went ahead and purchased the Cinestill Cs-41 home development KIT of chemicals, mixed them all up and jumped right in with my first roll. As every time, pulling the processed film out of the tank and hanging it to dry was very exciting. It was my first time shooting the camera and I was not sure how well it functioned and whether it had any light leaks. It was also my first home developed color negative. But yes, there were pictures!

Color negatives are tough to judge. Not only do negative colors look goofy but the extra orange layer that's put on them just makes the whole negative look almost monochromatic, until one looks really close. Then the cyan and other colors come out.

Since darkroom is not an option at the moment the film had to go through my scanner and scanning color negatives is not all that straightforward. Yes, the software has some handy presets for a given film and scanner combination but that's really just the start. It feels like it's more art than science. It will be a long learning road ahead but I did get some pictures I liked from this roll. When the scene has a neutral (gray, or white) object the color tweaking becomes much more straightforward.

Since this roll, I have also finished and developed the roll of Ektar, and bought a few more rolls to still catch some of the remaining fall colors. I've enjoyed shooting one in Letchworth yesterday. However, as the colors of nature fade out I really look forward to returning to black and white. Winter is a really great opportunity to be on a lookout for strong monochrome images.

I'm struggling to put words down as nothing I say can describe the feeling of standing there at the edge of the cliff waiting for Mother Nature to surprise. And surprise it always does. There is always a new twist to witnessing a sunrise here and even those that seemingly do not work out have their subtle magic. And when they do work out, well, it's easy to get carried away.

The suspense always actually starts even before arriving at the park. Already from the distance I watch the sky and try to guess what the morning is going to bring. I watch for patches of fog all along the way trying to confirm the conditions might just be right. Then, as I pass through the park gate my eyes are glued on the gorge ahead. Is there going to be a fog this morning? Is there going to be enough? Is it going to be low enough? What is the sun going to do? And there is only one way to tell. Park, walk up to find that morning's perfect spot, and wait and enjoy!

I know, it's Thursday and it's supposed to be a black and white and preferably film day. But it is also fall and colors are everywhere. As such, let's leave monochrome for another day and pay a quick visit to the Hanging Bog.

It's amazing how things can change in just a decade or two. I still remember when this used to be a barely known place. You could go almost any time, including weekends, and not meet anyone along the way. That has definitely changed now! On weekends, the new parking lot on route 277 fills up and the hike can feel like a stroll through a mall, including the coffee cups in people's hands. Weekdays are better based on your choice of time. And I still like the full trail from Seifert Rd. It feels more rewarding when one has to put in a tiny bit more effort :-)

So visit, enjoy, appreciate, and leave it as you found it.

Camera, Film, Print - An Analog Still LifeCamera, Film, PrintAn Analog Still Life It's Thursday and it's time for my somewhat regular analog post in the digital world. I had a frustrating time in the darkroom last night so it's nice to be able to review a print that worked out to my satisfaction. What happened yesterday? I am not 100% sure yet but I suspect it was due to me being cheap (again) and trying to use a depleted developer. When it happened to me before, it was obvious - everything would come out gray with absolutely no blacks. My first test yesterday seemed ok but looking at it later it was probably borderline. And it got worse from there.

I'll have to mix a new batch and re-try. If they come out as intended with the same settings, that will be my confirmation. And I have quite a few photos I'd like to print from the last few months. Maybe that will be an advantage of the long winter nights that there will be plenty of time to catch up and print out the warm scenes from summer.

Anyway, just a single print today from our summer Road Trip 2018. We made it to Route 66 several times but this was my first time capturing both the decay and the renaissance there the old-fashioned analog way on black and white film. It definitely provides a different feel and it's up to you all to decide which ones you like better.
