Previously from Lake Mead and the Valley of Fire: Road Trip through Mars - Road through Fiery Wonders - Out of This World - Further Out of This World - Driving through Painted Mojave Desert, Valley of Fire in a Painting

A different type of a photograph from the Valley of Fire today. It's a frame filling photo of a tree set against the red rocks of the valley. All that in beautiful subtle colors and in perspective that makes it look like the tree is painted on the cliff wall. At least that was my imagination when looking at the tree and still is now looking at the photo. I can actually get lost this photo and imagine even more abstract subjects, like a birds-eye-view of a river branching out across a landscape.

Seaside Pinhole Photography III

Zero Image 135 Dual Format Back to Nature SeriesZero Image 135Dual Format Back to Nature Series It's a cold and cloudy and a rainy day today and maybe that is what motivated me to go with a similar mood in today's post. Most often, you will see images from Hanalei Bay and Pier in full vivid color to show off the lush green mountain sides. Let me offer an alternative here. A black and white photo from a 35 mm pinhole camera. No colors, no pinpoint sharpness, but lots of mood.

What is it about pinhole that I find magical? It starts with film and the surprise factor. You don't really know what you're going to get until later. In case of travel photography, often much later. Then add the pinhole factor and the fact that you just approximately point it in a direction with no exact science. And with the tiny pinhole (the Zeroimage is f/138) combined with slow film (ISO 50 in this case) you end up with pretty long exposures further adding the unknown outcome you can only visualize.

The smoothing of the water surface was something I expected as that comes with the long exposures. But the wonderful transition from opaque to a clear reflection with ripples and back to opaque was definitely a surprise and a very pleasant one at that. Not something I can easily recreate or expect again.

Twelve Months, Twenty Photos 2018

October 09, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

Hello all of my blog followers! Unlike last year, I got my act together earlier this year giving you the opportunity to pick some of my photographs as presents for your family and friends this year. Since it is just the beginning of October, there is time to select one (or a few), decide on your framing options (you can buy them matted and framed directly from my website, get them framed locally, or do the honors yourselves), buy and receive them, and get them wrapped. And of course, if you just want to decorate your own walls with photographs from Buffalo and Western New York (and beyond), I would be very happy to help you.

Middle Falls Bright & Clear, Letchworth State ParkMiddle Falls Bright & ClearA frame-filling view of the beautiful Middle Falls of Letchworth State Park illuminated at dusk. Thanks to the illumination, it's quite a different experience to watch the sun set, throwing the gorge into a deep shadow and darkness only for the waterfall to emerge ever so bright!

Letchworth Middle Falls is one of the three major waterfalls right on the Genesee River as it flows through Letchworth State Park, and one of many waterfalls in the park. The waterfall is 107' high and about 285' wide.

Letchworth State Park is about 35 miles south of Rochester, NY and 60 miles from Buffalo, NY. It is along the Genesee River and follows it for about 17 miles. The park is most known for its three major waterfalls - Lower Falls, Middle Falls, and Upper Falls. However, there are many additional waterfalls on the Genesee River tributaries that are well worth exploring, especially for those who have visited the major and most obvious points of interest.

The Letchworth State Park Genesee River gorge at the beginning of a new day. So much to see, natural and man-made. Prominently featured in the center are the Middle Falls, and further back the Upper Falls. There, you can also see the two bridges, the old historical trestle (no longer standing) and the new arch bridge just in front of it. Then the steep rocky cliffs. And it is all surrounded with the bold colors of fall.

Green Lake is in the Yates Park, Orchard Park, New York, just a few miles south of Buffalo, NY. The lake, the park, and some surrounding land were donated to Orchard Park by a local businessman Harry Yates at the beginning of the twentieth century.

When Things Align

Using my links (Amazon) to do your shopping helps me share more photographs and write the stories behind them. And by all means, if you buy a photograph, that is the best reward and I appreciate it very much! You can get prints or a whole framed and matted ready to hang solutions with just a few mouse clicks.

I love it when multiple events align. It can be meticulously planned or it can be a total serendipity. The latter is what I was lucky to see and photograph this evening. My plan was to enjoy one of the beautiful sunsets over Lake Erie and hopefully get some good light and colors to photograph. And yes, luck was on my side too. High up in the sky, a crescent moon was also enjoying the colorful show of the setting sun.

Crossed Logs Take II

Couple pinhole posts back I shared my excitement about hitting the woods of Chestnut Ridge with my 4x5 Lensless pinhole camera. Especially the crossed logs scene caught my eye there despite the 40 minutes it required to expose on the positive photo paper.

I was not done with the scene yet either. A few days later the weather turned cloudy and I immediately had the itch to go back and see what difference the lower contrast would make. Here's the difference.

With this post, I also took the time to create a new home for my pinhole photographs beyond the city of Buffalo. Those cityscapes have already been living on timelessbuffalo.com for a while but the other ones lived only in my blog with no easy way to find them later and all in one place. That's changed now. You can now see them under Pinhole Photography.
