I'm getting a bit tired of this new weather pattern we've seen over a few years now. Winter comes in strong and leaves abruptly just a few days later with all of that beautiful white snow and ice turning into a dirty mush. What a waste! No worries though, this post is not going to be filled with me wining about the weather. Instead, it will be a bit of a catch up on a long overdue pair of photos.

My recent post The 70s Look? reminded me of these. If you're wondering why, you'll have to click the link and see for yourself. As the winter did to us, I am doing to winter and abandoning white & cold posts. See, there was a reason behind the opening after all. I hope you can feel the warmth radiating from these photos.
The train stop at Canalside is the subject of the first photo, with a northbound train ready for its trip up Main Street. The very early morning colors were wonderful and begged to be captured in a photograph. That's definitely one of the great things about summer. Yes, sunrises are early but when I wake up and get on location even before the sunrise I don't tent to meet a lot of other people. And that is just fine by me.

For the second photo, I walked to the other side of Canalside to enjoy a quiet view of the Buffalo River and its mouth to Lake Erie. Not only did I find that but I also found a very interesting juxtaposition of two ships. The USS Little Rock battle ship behind the masts and ropes of a small sailboat. My timing worked great as well as the rising sun illuminated the back of the navy ship and its name.

Moody Lake ShoreLake Erie
It was a cold early winter's day and I was hoping for some winter-in-your-face photographs on the shore of Lake Erie. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a beach windswept clean of any snow and it was too early for ice. The winter look wasn't going to be but the lake was still there and so were the beautiful rocks.

For this expedition, I was lugging my Mamiya 645 medium format film camera loaded with Ilford Pan F Plus black and white film. It's low ISO of 50 combined with a 6-stop ND filter was going to work great for the intended long exposure photographs.
I goofed up though! I composed my shot, carefully metered the scene, increased exposure by 6 stops to account for the filter factor of the neutral density filter I intended to use, put the filter on, and took the shot. And another, and another. With the 6 by 4.5 cm format one can fit 15 exposures on a roll of 120 film. Only for the 2nd last shot I noticed something was off. After placing the filter on the lens I actually looked through the viewfinder. I am not sure why but I did. And the strange thing was I could see the scene in front of me. Dim, but still there. That was not supposed to be! This late in the day with daylight quickly fading the viewfinder was supposed to be pretty much pitch black.
It turned out I reached for the wrong filter and kept using that instead of the ND filter. For all the photos, I used my HRT polarizing filter, which has a filter factor of only about 1.5 stops. Thus, I was overexposing all shots by about 4.5 stops! I finished the last two shots much the same way to allow for a consistent development of the whole role.
Having realized my mistake before developing the film I shortened the development and pulled the film by 1.5 stops, hoping to counteract the overexposure a little bit, bringing it down to about 3 stops. I was hoping the wide latitude of the black and white film would help with the rest. Another fact playing to my advantage was the low contrast of the scenes. There really were no hotspots and the range of tonality was limited. All of this combined and I pulled a well looking negative out of the tank!

It was a good learning experience to pay attention every step of the way and I am glad I was able to mostly recover and not pay the full pice and lose a roll. I hope you'll enjoy these moody photographs from our Great Lake.

Zine Issue 1: Road Trip 2018Daniel Novak Photo Zine
A blog post re-run today, but since I still have some issues left, I figured why not.
My first ever photo zine, Issue 1: Road Trip 2018, is still available and you can easily have it by clicking through the links here.
It's a selection of black and white analog photographs from my 2018 Road Trip covering Route 66, nature, and man-made presence within. The zine is press printed into a 8.5" x 5.5” landscape format booklet. It has 12 inside pages plus the cover and back image and offers the total of 15 black and white photographs. Each photograph is captioned with the location.
All of the included photographs were shot on Nikon FE and Ilford Delta 100 black and white film, and developed using Kodak XTOL developer.
The purpose of this zine is not to make money but to share my photography in a non-digital format. That concept is reflected in the zine's price. It is only $5.00, which includes $2.00 of charitable donations:
I have selected these two organizations based on this project and the photographs included in the zine as my way of giving back.

This was a fun Sunday afternoon in the city of Buffalo, NY. It was freezing but the sun came out and so had I and my camera. A few years back I bought a roll of experimental 35mm film that was supposed to produce muted colors shifted towards the blues reminiscent of the 70s, as well as some pretty strong grain. I thought I'd shoot it in summer when everything is colorful to take advantage of the film's strengths. But somehow, I never found the opportunity.

When the sun came out on a Sunday in the middle of a Western New York winter I decided it was about time. After all, the film actually expired back in November 2017 and we were into 2019 now. I loaded it into my Pentax Spotmatic and headed for the city with no clear target in mind. That proved to be another nice side benefit. I ended up taking a 4-mile walk from Shea's down Main Street to Canalside, over to the Erie Basin Marina and back to my starting point around the City Hall and Lafayette Square.
In the end, the film did exactly what it was meant to. I hope you'll enjoy this nostalgic detour from the world of digital perfection.

And just in case you are wondering, yes, there will be a few more down the road as this look is growing on me. On that note, if you did not like these the first time around, swing back in a few days and look again. Feel free to leave a comment in the guestbook to let me know what you think about these!
