I really enjoy photographing trees and their different shapes. Quite often, they appear to dance and wave their "arms" around. They may be engaged in different activities too.

This group of trees is very close to where I live and I have the opportunity to check them out often whether driving by or riding on a motorcycle or bicycle. They always look great but the simplicity of the landscape in winter and their leafless skeletons create an almost comic scene. Are they dancing? Are they sledding down the slope? Did the one on the left trip and fall?

Can you tell how the second photo relates to the first? Can you spot the common elements and what it took to get it? For this scene, I preferred the further simplified black and white look.

It's still winter and the driveway still needed shoveling three days in a row so it's still a great time to post white photographs. right? I'm sharing just one photograph today. It's a special one, a place that became one of my favorite for several reasons.

It's in my back yard, about a 10-minute drive thus easy and quick to get to in different seasons, different weather, different light, with different equipment. It's on a nice small rural back road that is great not only for a slow drive but also to ride either on a bicycle or a motorcycle with a camera on standby.

Some of these photogenic structures fare well and are still maintained, others do not have such a good luck and I have seen and photographed their deterioration and eventual fall. There's no way to know ahead of time. I certainly wish all of them could survive for years to come but should they succumb to the advance of time I am glad I at least preserved their memory.

Back to the Birdsong Park with my Yashica LM twin lens reflex camera for more square black and white photography. This time out of the woods focusing on the wonderful shapes of the trees trying to make it in the wet swamp.

Trees always captivate me with their form. They do so both in summer when they're full of foliage and in winter when they are bare and show their frame. And coniferous trees do too! They also can look rather different in summer and winter as they can hold winter's white coat better.
So here we are in winter and in between some dead trees spread around the trail of the Birdsong Park. It's a bright sunny day, there is no snow, but it is still a very cold winter day. Yes, you can see ice on the pond!

From the single general overlooking the whole area I've moved on further bit down the trail to photograph the general's phalanx of trees guarding passage on the trail. It's definitely one of my favorite places to photograph in the park and I always enjoy finding a new take on it. This day, the square format of the camera helped with a different composition and a different point of view.

When snow covers everything around, all becomes simplified and cleaner. And brighter too, even on those gloomy winter days. But when nature decides to put on a show and the sun comes out in winter, things look bright!

Anchored WinterWinter's Pond
Such was this day south of Buffalo, NY. It was cold, everything was white, and everything looked so beautiful! My exploration took me by the Winter's Pond and it was a great opportunity to capture the area in its white coat. The first photo offers the location with one of its hallmark attractions, the big anchor.
It is actually hard to tell that one is looking at a lake past that anchor. It looks like a field with some random grasses and structures scattered around. In reality, those are small islands on the lake.
I wondered around quite a bit more and enjoyed capturing some of the other objects that make the location so special. But at the very end of my walk another view struck me One much simpler and one that did not really have much to do with this location at all. It was more of a generic scene, a winter on the road scene.
If you return to my website and blog regularly you know I really enjoy scenes with roads running through the landscape, or I really should say roads running with the landscape ("Well, the road didn't cut through the land like that Interstate. It moved with the land, it rose, it fell, it curved. Cars didn't drive on it to make great time. They drove on it to have a great time." - Sally Carrera).

After visiting the city for a bit it's time to head back to the wilderness, or at least as close as one can get in the suburbs of Buffalo. Birdsong Park has been on my list of favorites for couple years now and I am still not feeling like I have exhausted what it has to offer. Not only does it look different each time I visit due to seasons, time of day, weather, but I also have the option of looking at things differently based on the camera I pack.

This day I was out with my twin lens reflex 1950s Yashica LM. I had it recently serviced to bring it back to top shape and wanted to try it out. A camera like that truly changes the pace. With the waist level finder things look different. The native square format also changes how I think about composition. And the fixed 80mm lens (a normal lens for a medium format camera; an equivalent to a 44mm lens on a 35mm camera) is quite longer compared to the wide angle lenses I normally prefer to shoot.
I found my first scene as soon as I turned into the woods. This creek scene against the rising sun looked perfect and the tree bend over the creek was the final magnet that made me crawl around through all of the prickly bushes to find my perfect vantage point.
