Living against the Odds

Since my very first visit to the Niagara Falls many years ago I've been captivated by the trees living literally on the edge in the most inhospitable conditions I can imagine. A tiny island barely accommodating a handful of trees by the edge of the Horseshoe Falls seems like a tough place to live even in summer being constantly attacked by the Upper Rapids of the Niagara River as well as the moisture of the ever present mist. Then in winter, it seems simply impossible. Yet, they are there, year after year wearing a frozen white coat. Is it that combination that makes it possible? The ice coating the trees head to toe protecting them from the inhospitable cold?

Last time we left the Czech Republic after visiting some tourist spots of Prague. This time we're back and in the countryside of Moravia wondering through beautiful vast poppy seed fields. When you catch them in the bloom it's quite a sight easily competing with sunflowers in my opinion. The charm of these fields comes in different forms. They're usually wide sweeping over some picturesque rolling hills setting up a typical European countryside landscape. But there's a lot to see even from up close and often it's the things that do not belong there that make up the complete picture.

The Crack at Sunset, Frozen Lake Erie, Hamburg - Buffalo, NYThe Crack at SunsetFrozen Lake Erie

I had briefly mentioned this sunset outing to the frozen lake a couple posts back (Inside an Ice Crack). In that post, I shared my closing photo of that night. Today, I'll roll back a bit to the moment I came to catch. Having arrived about half an hour before sunset I had time to wonder around and take advantage of the solidly frozen Lake Erie. What do I mean by that?

Without the ice, my movement is limited to the shoreline. With the ice, that restraint is lifted and all of a sudden I am free to wonder in all directions limited just by an initial hesitation before realizing how thick the ice is.

At first, the cracks are an area to avoid but soon I come to realize that's what this sunset is all about. A cold frozen lake, a warm sunset, and a crack in the ice connecting the two.

And then? The confirmation that the Earth is round indeed!

Back to the idea of black and white Thursdays, preferably on film. There's something that draws me back to these old theaters no matter what camera is in my hand. But with a 35mm camera loaded with black and white film, how could I not go there?

Further, this day was like made for black and white. A gentle sprinkling of snow on the streets, puffy snowflakes in the air, snow clouds floating overhead, simply a perfect black and white scene!
