A New Zine Issue 2: Chasing Waterfalls

April 02, 2019  •  Leave a Comment

Zine Issue 2: Chasing Waterfalls, Tea and a ZineZine Issue 2: Chasing WaterfallsTea and a Zine I have some very exciting news today! I'd like to announce the availability of my second photo zine, Issue 2: Chasing Waterfalls! It's available today and you can easily have it by clicking through the links here.

It's a selection of black and white analog photographs from our 2018 camping trip covering the waterfalls of Robert H Treman State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, a glimpse into Watkins Glen State Park, and the gorgeous Letchworth State Park. And it's not just waterfalls, there are a few other treasures encountered along the way.

The zine is press printed into a 8.5" x 5.5” landscape format booklet. It has 16 inside pages plus the cover and back image and offers the total of 19 previously unpublished black and white photographs. Each photograph is captioned with the location.

All of the included photographs were shot on Pentax Spotmatic and Fomapan 100 black and white film, and developed using Kodak XTOL developer.

The purpose of this zine is not to make money but to share my photography in a non-digital format. That concept is reflected in the zine's price. It is only $5.00, which includes $2.00 of charitable donations:

  • $1 from each zine benefits Robert H Treman State Park via the Natural Heritage Trust, the official charity of New York State Park
  • $1 from each zine benefits Buttermilk Falls State Park via the Natural Heritage Trust, the official charity of New York State Parks

I have selected these two organizations based on this project and the photographs included in the zine as my way of giving back.

How Were the Darkroom Prints from Lighthouse Beach Born?

March 28, 2019  •  Leave a Comment

Darkroom Print Collage - The Analog WayDarkroom Print CollageThe Analog Way A few posts back I shared my photos from a chilly morning at the Lighthouse Beach on Lake Michigan. Today, I'm adding on a couple traditional darkroom prints on silver gelatin photo paper.

Support this blog: Do you like my free content but are not ready to buy a photograph yet? Using my links (Amazon) to do your shopping helps me share more photographs and write the stories behind them. And by all means, if you buy a photograph, that is the best reward and I appreciate it very much! You can get prints or whole framed and matted ready to hang solutions with just a few mouse clicks (get an overview here).

I have photographed both versions of the Grosse Point Lighthouse presented here on the simple Lubitel 166B and a black and white Fomapan 400 film. The camera takes the 120 format and shoots 6 cm x 6 cm square photos. Nope, it was not Instagram that started the square format.

Grosse Point LighthouseLet's look it over Later, I have printed these on an 8" x 10" traditional black and white silver gelatin photo paper in my darkroom. along with couple other prints from a different photo op. You can see all of them, including my test strips, on the collage above along with the two cameras of choice. I used the Lubitel for the two beach photos and the Nikon FE for the Orchard Park train depot  and tracks.

How is a darkroom print born? First, an enlarger is used to project the image through the negative film onto a photographic paper. Then, the paper goes into a developer for about 2 minutes. About 20 seconds in the whole image starts to appear all at once and within a few seconds the wet photo looks back at you. The rest of the development time serves to get some really nice rich black tones.

From the developer the print is transferred to a stop bath, or just plain water, which is what I usually use. About a minute there stops the development process and washes the developer off.

Grosse Point LighthouseLet's look it over The last chemical bath is the fixer, which insures the print is no longer sensitive to light and lasts for years to come. The time in the fixer varies based on the paper type used. For resin coated papers I usually fix for about 5 minutes.

From the fixer, I put the prints into a large bucket of water where I keep them while I develop a few more prints. Once a nice small batch is in the bucket, I move the prints into a print washer tray where I further wash them in running water to make sure no fixer is left behind. And then it's like with laundry, the prints are hung to dry.

I usually leave them hanging for about an hour or two and then lay them flat in a warm dry place to finish the drying process. Finally, I use an archival pen to sign the back, title and date the print, and it's ready for display or to go to a new owner.

To get the photos posted here on my website, I either take a photograph of the prints or run them through a scanner.

Spring Rumble

March 26, 2019  •  Leave a Comment

Is it about time for spring to show up? I think so. Let's at least enjoy its looks on today's blog post. First, spring brings water to creeks and rivers that may not have so much of it later in the year. And later, nature bursts in greens and finally breaks up the six months of gray!

And all of that is great for putting the hiking shoes on and hitting the trail, whether for a short local walk or a long back-country trail. I am not into video but the humming of water rushing by sometimes prompts me to change things up a bit and capture a moving picture rather than my usual still. So first, pick a rock, sit down, and enjoy for a few seconds.

Now how to translate this experience into a still photograph? For the motion of the flowing water, two approaches are possible. One can go with a really fast shutter speed and capture tack sharp droplets of water suspended in the air. In my opinion, that works really well for powerful rivers with rapids full of power. Another approach is to go with a long exposure, half a second or longer, to allow the flowing water to blur into continuous strands of water. The longer the exposure the less pronounced the individual strands get and everything gradually changes into one milky and misty body of water. It's up to the photographer to decide what fits the mood best. I wanted to retain most of the different patterns to show the direction in which the water moved around the rocks and selected a fairly short long exposure of 0.8 seconds.

White Buffalo

An early riser at the Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo, NY usually gets rewarded with some wonderful views, great light, and solitude. It's a nice change of pace being here in the early morning hours.

I arrived early and walked around enjoying the crisp air and quiet atmosphere while looking around and waiting for the sun to rise out of its bed. And then it happened and the first rays started reaching the tops of the buildings. I set up and waited, eventually clicking the shutter and capturing that particular moment of the morning. At these hours the changes are very rapid. Moment by moment additional windows and floors and whole buildings get lit up. It's almost like a real-time time-lapse.
