Colorful Morning InspirationLetchworth State Park
I am not a fan of the daylight savings time. Let me clarify, I am not a fan of the changes that come along with it. If I had my choice, I'd just switch to daylight savings time permanently as I like the long summer days and am less concerned about darkness in the morning. But don't worry, I am not going to bore you with the benefits, or the lack of, of DST. I will admit though that the changes sometimes come with benefits.
Like this time. As the clock rolled back it put enough time between sunrise and the start of a business day, all of a sudden allowing me to enjoy a daybreak at a wonderful place away from people with mostly just birds sharing the moment with me. And it did not even require the crazy wake up time of 4 a.m. that's needed at the peak of daylight savings time.
Well, I could not exactly sleep in either as I wanted to turn this into a truly relaxing morning. Too many times in the past did I try to save every minute of sleep arriving either just in time or couple minutes too late for the best show. So this time, the alarm announced a new day at 5 a.m. and I was enjoying the fresh air and the dim view of the gorge by 6:30. On weekends, there's a pretty good chance a few people will be around even this early as some of the viewpoints are now too famous for their sunrise views. But on weekdays, that's rare.
And as you can see this is not a typical sunrise photograph. Not only was it very cloudy but you're looking south here, even slightly to the west. As I set up my tripod and started thinking about my composition I saw a very deep and bold red in the sky to my left, even doubting my decision to come here this morning. But each time I refocused knowing that I had previously photographed the sunrise and this was the location that deserved a new look in my photo collection. And the heavy clouds were perfect, diffusing the light and illuminating the whole gorge while providing a nice dramatic backdrop for the colorful foliage. Really, one could not wish for much more.
Now as I am writing this, guess where I'd rather be than in front of the computer screen?

Broadway TheatreBuffalo, NY
The Broadway Theatre, Buffalo, NY established as the Sattler Theatre in 1914. It was renamed to Broadway Theatre in 1920. The building was purchased by the Western New York Minority Media Professionals (WNYMMP) in 2008. Fundraising has been ongoing since but I have not been able to get any recent info on the fundraising status or plans as of 2017.
It's a beautiful historic building that was on the city demolition list for a while. Will it make it in the end? With so much positive happening in Buffalo, will it reach all the way here?
On this beautiful blue sky day I wanted to insure the building's preservation in a photograph of mine. Out of the possible angles and given the surroundings I opted for the straight head on shot here carefully leveling the camera and aligning all of my verticals to insure I would not cause a premature leaning of the building forward or backward.
Once I was happy with the single shot version I took this opportunity one step further and worked to create a series of shots to stitch into one large resolution image. There are several advantages to this. First, one could print a photo really large with an amazing level of detail even upon close inspection. And second, it allows for zooming in and studying the architectural details as if standing right by the facade despite being across the street.
In the end, I captured 13 vertical and overlapping photographs to provide a 134 megapixel photograph of the Broadway Theatre. It's hard to show how large it could print here so instead I will show the detail captured:

Gorge of ColorsLetchworth State Park
After a short break we're returning to the wonderful Letchworth State Park to witness another day's end. This time I arrived sooner gaining more time to experience the magic of a bright day turning into dusk for a few brief moments only to disappear in the darkness of the night.
We take these transitions for granted. Indeed, they're there to witness twice a day so why pay attention, right? Did you ever take the time to slow down or stop and actually really pay attention? Isn't it amazing how quickly it happens? As the sun approaches the horizon, or a mountain ridge, its speed of movement becomes so obvious and so incredibly fast!
Such was this evening too. Just couple minutes after this photo the cliffs on the left lost the sunshine, and then I could watch the line of the light as it climbed the trees up the the treetops and above. And that was it, another evening to remember!

Let's continue this black and white Thursday theme for another week while staying in Orchard Park and not far from the scene of the previous Train Depot photo.
If you are interested in learning more about the behind the scenes of shooting straight on an old fashioned photo paper, feel free to hop back to my previous post (Orchard Park Train Depot).
The one thing I am still getting used to is the lack of a viewfinder. I can either guess where the front of the camera is pointed and how wide of a view the camera will capture, or try to approximate things with my regular camera and then replace it in the tripod with the large format pinhole. Unfortunately, I do not have a lens wide enough for this exercise as the Lensless Pinhole I selected is 50 mm. 50 mm on a 4x5" format is equivalent to 15 mm on a 35 mm (full frame) format.
Of course, I can also do some math and create a viewfinder but I am on the fence with that idea as it would take some of the crudeness out of the experience. Maybe I will just rely on practice and learn what fits in and what does not.
