I really love having the lake right in my back yard! It provides so much fun and so much inspiration and it does so in all seasons! While most people see the lake shore as a summer destination I love to visit all year long. Thinking about it and reviewing my photographs actually indicates I go there more in winter than summer. In winter, there are fewer people around, which provides the solitude I often seek with photography. And scenes often look so different, so unique, so unexpected. Ice and snow makes everything bright and clean. I like winter on the lake for both natural landscapes and for urban photography and cityscapes.
Here's one such photograph. A hallmark of the Buffalo Outer Harbor, the Cargill Pool grain elevator. It's been my favorite subject for many years. And even though it's been rather over-photographed in the last few years, I still like going back for more. Here it is from the less common South End Marina side on a wonderful winter day.

Colden Falls in SnowWinter in Western New York
Waterfall chasing is certainly a summer activity for most people. However, winter can turn waterfalls into a true winter wonderland. With so much water, ice and snow can completely change their character. Another bonus comes in the form of smaller crowds, if any. In most cases, you will actually have the waterfall and the surrounding area all to yourself.
Ice and snow can also simplify the scene quite a bit. I like that with winter photography in general and waterfalls are no exception. All of the ground clutter gets covered up and it's easy to focus on just the key elements.
In the case of Colden Falls, winter also throws in an extra obstacle. The base of the falls if very difficult, if not impossible, to safely access. Yes, maybe I am a chicken, but all of that streaming frigid water actually triggers a lot of respect in me. Thus, this different vantage point for a place I like to return to often. It's a good thing to try something new and look for different angles, but I really like to get close.
From this elevated vantage point, I actually liked the vertical view the most. I especially liked the splash pool area closed off by the ice, only opening where the rushing water prevented freezing.

Sitting at the bar of a Mexican Restaurant waiting for my lunch with my travel companion, the Lubitel 166B, at my hand. The objects, the lines, the light and shadows started taking shape. The bar table reflection joined the,, And then the glass full of water, or so I claim.

As you start climbing the Waimea Canyon Drive the pullouts offer some wonderful views in all directions. Then, this one comes on the right and the view seems to be endless. It offers a beautiful view along the Waimea River right into the canyon heart. With the clouds zooming by the light is changing by the second and the scene seems to offer a never repeating palette of variations.
What I especially like about this view is that it offers a subtle combination of a pristine natural landscape with a hint of the human presence. Might the combination be so subtle everywhere and for years to come!

Hawaii became the 50th state to join the United States on August 21, 1959. The capital city is Honolulu (Oahu). The highest point is Mauna Kea at 13,803 feet (4207 meters) (island of Hawaii, aka The Big Island), a dormant volcano last erupting 2460 BC. Mauna Kea is over 33,000 feet (10000 meters) tall, making it the world's tallest mountain measured from its base to the summit; the majority of which is under water. The highest point on Kauai is Kawakini Peak about a mile south of Mt. Waialeale, the volcano that originally built up the island.

For today's post I'm sharing a few photos from a one-day personal project. As I was sitting in my hotel room while traveling I was thinking about what to shoot. I wanted to try something different than my favorite early morning sunrises over Lake Michigan. The idea that came to me was something that was all around me.
We are in such a hurry these days, and we have grown so lazy. We can't even park our cars and get our bottoms off the seat. Yes, I am inferring the topic of drive-through food establishments. You see, even there the language takes a lazy toll and they're drive-thrus, not drive-throughs.
That reminds me of what I learned at the Theodore Roosevelt Inagural Site right here in Buffalo, NY. Apparently, he did not like long words with convoluted spelling either and proposed many changes, including shortening "ough". Yes, he preferred thru to through and thus would have preferred drive-thru to drive-through long before they even existed.
All of the photos you see here have been shot on a simple and light-weight twin-lens reflex camera, the Lubitel 166B, on black and white Fomapan 400 film (in 120 square format, or 6x6 cm).

To go with the photos, I'd like to share some bits and pieces of facts and history related to the topic. All of this info is collected from the Internet so take it for what it's worth. Misinformation spreads quickly. But since this is not a matter of life and death, I am sharing these with this disclaimer.

There are some unexpected drive-through places out there, like drive-through viewing at a funeral home, drive-through praying by churches, drive-through art galleries and museums, drive-through law firms, and even a drive through liquor and gun store.
